CTV News: Be informed donors before donating to Ukrainian relief. "Charity Intelligence is a Canadian organization that researches charities to help people be informed donors. The managing director urges people to resist donating physical items like clothing or food, suggesting the number of things already contributed is unprecedented.
Bahen believes despite many Ukrainians leaving their belongings behind, financial assistance is the best way to ensure physical or monetary donations get into Ukraine directly, suggesting The Ukrainian Red Cross or Airbnb as top picks.
However, The Ukrainian Red Cross is not a registered charity in Canada so donors will not receive a receipt. " Better to look for registered charities because there's a high degree of accountability and transparency in the charitable model."
Websites like canadahelps.org provide a list of organizations that are supporting Ukraine, suggesting people follow their passion and do their homework when contributing to organizations.

During the first year, the college's focused financial outreach entails support for four Ukrainian students who wish to continue their studies in Canada, as well as full relocation support for an additional student in partnership with World University Service of Canada (WUSC). While the current priority is to support displaced persons from Ukraine, in subsequent years funding will be distributed based on geopolitical circumstances and needs.

Donated by college community members, GTA residents and local grocery stores, the non-perishable food items will be forwarded to the Red Cross to ship directly to eastern Europe. Some of the donated items will also be prioritized for Ukrainian refugees as they arrive in Canada.
A number of publicly funded colleges across Ontario have made a joint donation of $200,000 to UNICEF's Ukraine emergency fund. Others, like Centennial, have opted to make significant contributions by way of tuition relief programs, new scholarships, counselling programs, community partnerships, and more, to those from Ukraine and other regions impacted by geopolitics.

Wings Magazine: Canada has sent heavy artillery and ammunition to Ukraine
Canada has sent a number of M777 howitzers and ammunition from the Canadian Armed Forces to the Security Forces of Ukraine, fulfilling the prime minister’s promise to send heavy artillery to the embattled country.
It’s the Canadian Army’s main artillery gun, firing 155-millimetre shells. Thirty-seven of the weapons were acquired from the United States.
The Liberal government has previously dipped into the Canadian Armed Forces inventory to provide lethal aid to the Ukrainian military.
In response to Russia’s attack, the government recently deployed one M777 unit to reinforce a Canadian-led NATO battlegroup in Latvia.
The federal government said it’s finalizing contracts to buy commercial pattern armoured vehicles that will be sent to Ukraine as soon as possible.
It’s also negotiating a service contract for maintenance and repair of the specialized drone cameras that have already been sent.
The government set aside another $500 million in the recently released budget to provide military aid to Ukraine, after committing $118 million worth of equipment since January.

Midland Today: Letter from reader: Canada should help get Australian Bushmasters to Ukraine
On April 8, Australia’s prime minister, Scott Morrison, confirmed that Australia will gift 20 Bushmasters to Ukraine, at a cost of approximately 50 million Australian dollars. Surely, Canada could commit $50 million as well, ‘buy’ another 20 Bushmasters from Australia, and deliver them to the Ukrainian military.
The first of 360 armoured combat support vehicles ordered by the Canadian government, rolled out of General Dynamics’ London, Ont., plant last May. Would there not be some available to transfer to Ukraine? How quickly could production be ramped up at this facility?
There is ongoing discussion among 35 allies, including Canada, about how to best support Ukraine’s militarily in a calibrated manner.

CBC: Trudeau says Canada is sending artillery to Ukraine
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier this week that Canada will send artillery to Ukraine in response to a request from President Volodymyr Zelensky — which would mark a shift in the nature of the military aid Canada is offering the embattled nation.
Since Russia invaded, Canada has been largely sending the Ukrainians light infantry weapons such as rocket launchers, hand grenades and anti-armour weapon systems — weapons meant to be used by only one or two people at relatively short ranges.
Canada has sent 4,500 M-72 rocket launchers to Ukraine. The weapon has a range of 150 to 200 metres "on a really good day."
Canada also has sent Ukraine 100 Carl Gustaf anti-tank systems. Those have a range of between 400 and 600 metres, Leslie said.
Canada also has provided protective items such as helmets and body armour.

CP24 News: Canada will send heavy artillery to Ukraine, Trudeau pledges
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed plans Tuesday to send heavy artillery to embattled Ukraine as Canada levied new sanctions against more than a dozen close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin, including his two daughters.
Earlier this month Zelenskyy released a list of equipment he said the Ukrainian military needed to fight Russia, including 155-millimetre heavy artillery guns and ammunition.
The Canadian Army’s main artillery gun is the M777 howitzer, firing 155-millimetre shells.
Also Canada provide 50 light-armoured vehicles to Ukraine, as Retired lieutenant-general Andrew Leslie suggested.
Following Russia's attack that began Feb. 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 700 individuals and entities from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Last week, sanctions targeted organizations that have provided support to the Russian military — directly or indirectly — including the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Integral SPB and Shipyard Vympel JSC.
Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, Canada has levied sanctions on more than 1,100 individuals and entities.

CBC News: Canadian airports setting up settlement services for Ukrainian refugees
Settlement agencies across the country have joined forces to support Ukrainians arriving through a federal emergency program at airports in Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver, Canada's immigration minister said Tuesday.
Sean Fraser said 41,000 people have been approved through an emergency travel initiative launched last month to help people resettle after many fled to Europe to escape Russia's war on Ukraine.
They have been arriving at the Toronto and Edmonton international airports since April 1, and in Vancouver since April 8.
Chris Friesen of the Canadian Immigrant Settlement Sector Alliance said a central online portal involving 500 national agencies will be available later this month so Canadians can offer support like housing, employment and donations. Newly arrived Ukrainians can also access the site to ask for help.
About 80,000 refugees have already been resettled in Canada.

Budget 2022: Canada’s Leadership in the World

Increasing the Capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces
The review of Canada’s defence policy will include an assessment of the equipment and technology that the Canadian Armed Forces need to fulfill their missions in a world that has fundamentally changed in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Support for Ukraine
Including new measures proposed in Budget 2022, Canada has announced more than $1.2 billion in direct contributions in support of Ukraine and its people in 2022, in addition to an offer of up to $1.6 billion in loan support for the Ukrainian government.
To date in 2022, the federal government has announced more than $90 million in military aid —both lethal and non-lethal—to support Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty. Canada has also committed $145 million in humanitarian assistance and $35 million in development assistance to provide direct support to Ukrainians who have been affected by the illegal Russian invasion. This includes $30 million that matched the donations of individual Canadians. Canada has also provided new funding of $111 million over five years, with $6 million future years, to implement new immigration measures to support Ukrainians fleeing Ukraine’s invasion.
Through additional contributions made through Budget 2022, Canada will continue to play a leading role in international support for Ukraine. New contributions include:
- Announcing that Canada will offer up to $1 billion in new loan resources to the Ukrainian government through a new Administered Account for Ukraine at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) so that its government can continue to operate. Canada worked with the government of Ukraine, the IMF, and other member countries to develop this facility and encourage allies and partners to participate.
- An additional $500 million million in 2022-23 to provide further military aid to Ukraine.
- Announcing the government’s intent to clarify the ability of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to seize and cause the forfeiture and disposal of assets held by sanctioned individuals and entities, which will support Canada’s participation in the REPO Taskforce that is targeting Russia’s elite and their assets around the world.

The federal government has announced additional measures to help refugees trying to flee Ukraine and come to Canada.

These measures include charter flights to Canada for Ukrainians, short-term income support to help ensure their basic needs are met for six weeks, as well as temporary hotel accommodation for up to two weeks.

He said the government is making the move to "reduce the pressure on biometrics collection."

Stand Up For Ukraine:

***

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau: On March 26, 2022, the European Commission and the Government of Canada announced the launch of a global campaign to raise funding in support of people fleeing the invasion of Ukraine, in partnership with international advocacy organization Global Citizen.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the international community on behalf of his citizens who have been displaced by the war, saying: “On 9 April, the biggest online event ‘Social Media Rally’ will support people who were forced to flee Ukraine. I'm inviting everybody: musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, politicians, everybody. Everyone who wants to join this movement and ‘Stand Up for Ukraine’.”
The “Stand Up For Ukraine” campaign seeks to mobilize governments, institutions, artists, companies and individuals to direct funding to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries. Global Citizen will announce more details in the coming days about how people can support.
It will culminate in a pledging event on 9 April, co-hosted by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The aim is to raise funds and mobilize support more broadly, to cater for the needs of internally displaced people and of refugees.
“Today, our message to the Ukrainian people is this: we are standing with you. Whether you need food, water, shelter, or medical aid – we are rallying the world to continue to have your backs and provide critical assistance where it is needed most. When we all work together, we can achieve the best outcomes for those displaced by Putin’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine.”

Centennial College: Centennial College earmarks $110,000 annually to assist students escaping war-torn nations
Precipitated by recent global crises and in line with its activist global citizenship principles, Centennial College is allocating $110,000 of financial assistance per year for refugees and persons displaced by war and political strife.
In addition, Centennial will work closely with internal partners and external settlement agencies in the GTA to provide students with comprehensive supports related to language, socio-cultural transition, financial and employment needs to fulfill a critical role in the successful resettlement of this vulnerable population.

In addition, Centennial recently collected 10,000 pounds of essential food items to support the people of Ukraine in partnership with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Ukrainian Canadian Medical Association, Toronto Police Divisions 41, 42 and 43, and faculty, student and staff volunteers from Centennial's School of Community and Health Studies.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada: Government of Canada launches fund to support research trainees from Ukraine
Scientists, academics and researchers are crucial to expanding our basic understanding of the world, not only by generating new ideas but also by speaking out to defend freedom from tyranny. The Government of Canada understands the value of scientific freedom and is working with its partners to provide support to researchers and students affected by Vladimir Putin's unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine.
Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced the launch of the Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine), which provides support to research trainees from Ukraine in the form of supplements to existing grants.
This special fund provides relief and assistance to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers directly impacted by the invasion of Ukraine. Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas Art: Celebrated Canadian artist targets $100,000 goal for Ukraine aid
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, whose work is displayed in the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and public and private collections worldwide, has launched a fundraising project to help victims of the Russian war.
He had an exhibition scheduled this autumn at the TSEKH Art Gallery in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Photo CRedit: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas Art

One of the works that would have been displayed is a piece called Kyiv Child. It is a piece he created after visiting Ukraine in 2019.
"I made many friends on that trip, and now they are huddling in basements, holding their children close. They worry about food, water, and Putin's indiscriminate bombing of civilians."
"We decided to make prints of Kyiv Child to raise money for UNICEF Canada, and Doctors Without Borders projects in Ukraine." The limited-edition prints of Kyiv Child will be available beginning Monday, March 28, 2022 for $500 plus tax.
Malaspina Printmakers is providing high-quality art paper and pigment, labour, and the press at no cost. Others have donated funds to cover other expenses so that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to UNICEF Canada, and Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Canada.
"This work, Kyiv Child, is inspired by a centuries-old stone carving from St. Michael's Cathedral in Ukraine's capital city. On that carving, a warrior on horseback carries a spear. For my adaptation of this work, the 'stone' is now the hood of a ZAZ-AA03 Slavuta car manufactured in a post-Soviet Ukraine. And the warrior is replaced by a mother and child travelling over a plain gilded in gold and silver."
"I hope that when Ukraine is again a free country, Kyiv Child will be exhibited back in her home."
Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas is the only living Indigenous artist whose work is in the permanent collection of the Modern and Contemporary Art Department at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. His works are also in the collections of the British Museum, Denver Art Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Museum of Anthropology at UBC.

Toronto Star: Tech stepping up
Imagine having to uproot your life in the blink of an eye to ensure your family’s safety.
That’s what millions of Ukrainians now have to do as they flee the ongoing war in their country. And that’s why Canadian tech companies are stepping up to help them.
Tech founders Kostyantyn Khomutov of Ottawa-based GBatteries and Solon Angel of MindBridge are leading a new initiative called “Ukraine to Canada”, which helps refugees make their way out of the war zone.
Not only is the initiative helping refugees relocate and find a place to stay in Canada, economic development agency Invest Ottawa is also helping their effort by providing office space for workers who were forced to upend their careers in Ukraine.
“Ukraine to Canada” follows a larger tech community trend with other ventures extending help for those displaced by the war. Airbnb.org is offering free, short-term housing to up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine. There is also the Tech For Ukraine campaign, which has recruited more than 450 IT companies from 40 countries. The firms will help NGOs for free to address digital challenges, including protecting against Russian cyberattacks.

JOBS TD Bank Group: TD increases donation to $1 million in support of resettlement efforts and humanitarian relief in Ukraine and globally.
TD announces recruitment efforts to help provide employment opportunities to displaced individuals.
TD announced that it is increasing its financial contribution to a total of $1 million to support humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine and assist refugees globally. This complements the financial support already announced in February with additional donations of $100,000 to UNHCR Canada, the UN Refugee Agency, and $100,000 to the Canada Ukraine Foundation's Humanitarian Appeal. TD will also provide $500,000 to support relief and resettlement efforts for those impacted by these global events as they unfold.
TD is also increasing its efforts to hire refugees and displaced individuals, including those arriving in Canada through the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel, for roles at the bank to help provide them with meaningful employment and stability as they arrive in Canada. TD will actively recruit for these roles by leveraging the efforts of its talent acquisition team and its existing relationships with Jumpstart and ACCES Employment, organizations involved with connecting newcomers to Canada with employment opportunities. Applicants can also apply directly through TD Opportunities.
TD is focused on providing refugees and newcomers to Canada with greater access to financial services, employment and financial education, and in 2019 established a TD Executive Task Force on Refugees to drive progress and help address the unique needs and circumstances of refugees. TD's recent efforts include:
• Helping to recruit refugees through events and working relationships with Jumpstart and other community organizations.

• Empowering and supporting new Canadians with convenient banking options and special offers on select products for newcomers.
TD is also extending acceptance of donations for Ukrainian support from its customers through its branch and store networks.

The Power Workers' Union: The Power Workers' Union (PWU) has donated $100,000.00 to the Canadian Red Cross Society to provide lifesaving aid to those in Ukraine, as well as those affected in neighboring countries.
On February 24th, Russia invaded Ukraine in an act of war, using methods of extreme force to displace Ukrainians from their homes. The senseless military attack by Russia on Ukraine is even more inexplicable as they target innocent civilians. Families are being separated, with parents using stickers to identify their children's blood types and sending them with their kids to school as a sign of precaution should the unthinkable happen. Even more children are being sent to neighbouring countries alone, with nothing but a note in their hand, while their parents must participate in an unprovoked war.
The landscape in Ukraine looks vastly different a month after the invasion began, with streets strewn with rubble, families separated, and thousands injured. Ukraine has endured significant infrastructure damage, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity and water, while damaged roads have disrupted supply chains, leaving families and communities cut off from food and basic supplies.
Since the war's beginning, more than three million people have fled Ukraine to surrounding countries, and it's estimated that around 18 million, a third of their entire population will require humanitarian assistance. This humanitarian assistance that the Canadian Red Cross Society is providing includes food, water, shelter, as well as emergency medical care, including psychological support for those mentally and emotionally affected by the unrest.
The PWU hopes this small donation is able to help bring peace and assist in mitigating the severe unrest for the people of Ukraine.

The Canadian Press: Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says the government will help Ukrainians arriving in Canada find a job and learn to speak English or French.
Applications opened March 17 for a program to allow Ukrainians fleeing conflict in their home country to come to Canada for up to three years while they decide whether they want to apply for permanent residency.
The Immigration Department says nearly 60,000 Ukrainians and their family members have applied for the program so far.
The program is unlike the regular process for refugees, which includes help to find housing and community orientation.
On Twitter, Fraser says his department is working on more ways to help settle the potentially thousands of Ukrainians who could come to Canada over the next several weeks.
Beginning Friday, help will be available at certain airports to welcome Ukrainians, with assistance and arrival information in their language.

UNICEF Canada: More than half of Ukraine's children displaced after one month of war
Ongoing violence across the country has created a child rights crisis that could last for generations.
One month of war in Ukraine has led to the displacement of 4.3 million children – more than half of the country's estimated 7.5 million child population. This includes more than 1.8 million children who have crossed into neighbouring countries as refugees and 2.5 million who are now internally displaced inside Ukraine.
According to OHCHR, 78 children have been killed, and 105 have been injured in Ukraine since the start of the war on 24 February. Yet these figures represent only those reports that the UN has been able to confirm, and the true toll is likely far higher.
UNICEF and its partners are working to reach children in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries with humanitarian assistance.
In Ukraine, UNICEF has delivered medical supplies to 49 hospitals in 9 regions – including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro and Lviv – improving access to healthcare for 400,000 mothers, newborns and children. UNICEF continues to distribute water and hygiene items in communities under siege. In addition, UNICEF is increasing the number of mobile child protection teams working inside acute conflict zones from 22 to 50 and has delivered 63 trucks of lifesaving supplies to support the needs of over 2.2 million people. In the coming weeks, UNICEF will start emergency cash transfers to the most vulnerable families and establish child friendly spaces in key locations across the country.
To protect and support the millions of children and families who have fled Ukraine, UNICEF and UNHCR in partnership with governments and civil society organizations, have created "Blue Dots," one-stop safe spaces for children and women.'Blue Dots' provide key information to traveling families, help to identify unaccompanied and separated children and ensure their protection. They also provide a hub for essential services. 'Blue Dots' have already been established in countries hosting Ukrainian children and women and are being scaled up over the coming days, including more than 20 in Poland.

The HALO Trust: Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, thanks The HALO Trust in Ukraine for 'saving lives everyday.'
The HALO Trust today announced that Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, spoke with two staff members of The HALO Trust based in Ukraine, who are leading efforts to educate Ukrainians on how to recognize and avoid explosive devices they may come across as the conflict in Ukraine evolves. Prince Harry, who has continued his mother's legacy of involvement with HALO, thanked them for 'saving lives everyday.' Additionally, The HALO Trust was grateful to receive a contribution from Archewell Foundation, co-founded by Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to HALO's education efforts in the Ukraine.
Prince Harry met virtually with Olesia and Maryna, two women who are full-time employees of The HALO Trust in Ukraine, along with 430 other Ukrainian men and women. Despite the war forcing them both to flee their homes, they have been able to continue their work to keep people safe from explosives through a major digital media campaign that has been seen by over 17 million Ukrainians. Both women have helped drive the campaign over Instagram and TikTok, ensuring that young people, who are most at risk through their natural curiosity, are aware of the lethal hazards of unexploded ordnances.
During the call, The Duke praised the work of The HALO Trust and its ability to share life-saving messages during the conflict, now entering its fourth week.
The HALO Trust was founded in Afghanistan in 1988 and now employs 10,000 men and women in 28 countries and territories either at war or recovering from conflict. HALO has cleared over 1.9 million landmines, 1.5 million pieces of unexploded ordnance and 10 million bullets in the last three decades. It has conducted life-saving mine clearance operations in eastern Ukraine since 2016.
The HALO Trust is currently setting up an urgent crisis hub in Western Ukraine, where Ukrainian staff will be able to continue their work in safety, delivering urgent risk messaging to communities and planning how it can map and survey the different types of weapons being used in the conflict, their location and their quantities. This is the essential before the safe delivery of aid and the start of clearance operations.
The United States is the world's largest donor for programs that remove landmines, unexploded hazards, and other dangerous weapons left by war. The American people have contributed more than $250 million per year for this cause, becoming HALO's largest supporter.

CRTC: RT and RT France can no longer be distributed by Canadian television service providers.
Programming on RT and RT France is s not consistent with Canadian broadcasting standard . Today, the CRTC formally removed RT (previously known as Russia Today) and RT France from the List of non-Canadian programming services and stations authorized for distribution.
Further to a public consultation, the CRTC determined that the continued authorization to distribute RT and RT France is not in the public interest. RT's programming is not consistent with the standards against which Canadian services are measured nor the policy objectives set out in the Broadcasting Act. The CRTC is also concerned with programming from a foreign country that seeks to undermine the sovereignty of another country, demean Canadians of a particular ethnic background and undermine democratic institutions within Canada.
The Commission took into account the submissions and notes the seriousness of the allegations provided in the interventions. It also considered the reports of the actual situation in Ukraine, the current and escalating sanctions on Russia and Russian individuals, as well as the swift steps taken by other jurisdictions to pull the services.
Television service providers are authorized to distribute foreign television services in order to provide Canadians with a broad range of views and voices. These services are not licensed like Canadian services. However, the CRTC considers that non-Canadian news services should be held to the same standards in respect of their programming as Canadian services.

Canada.ca: Canada to match up to $10 million in donations from Canadians in response to humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Canada is deeply concerned by the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Today, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, announced that Canada will match every donation made by individual Canadians to the Canadian Red Cross between February 24, 2022, and March 18, 2022, up to a maximum of $10 million.
The generosity of Canadians when a crisis strikes is always remarkable, and their efforts in times of need make a difference. This matching funding reinforces Canada’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine. This funding is in addition to the $50 million in funding for development and humanitarian aid that Canada has recently announced and the $620 million in sovereign loans that Canada has recently offered Ukraine.
Global Affairs Canada will match every donation made by individual Canadians to the Canadian Red Cross’s Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. The Canadian Red Cross will in turn allocate the total amount of funding to support the efforts of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, other national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in responding to the humanitarian needs caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These critical funds will allow the Red Cross to support immediate and ongoing relief efforts and other critical humanitarian activities, both in Ukraine and in surrounding countries, including support for populations that have been displaced.
In 2021, according to the United Nations Financial Tracking Service, Canada ranked as the 4th largest single-country donor of humanitarian assistance funding to Ukraine.
Canada will remain in close contact with humanitarian partners on the ground to determine the best way to respond to this crisis.
• Canadians who would like to donate to the matching fund for the Canadian Red Cross’s Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal can do so online or by calling 1-800-418-1111.
• In addition to this matching fund, Canada has provided over $64 million in humanitarian assistance since the onset of the crisis in Ukraine in 2014.
• On January 21, 2022, Canada announced that it had offered a loan of up to $250 million to the Government of Ukraine to support the country’s economic resilience and governance reforms.
