On August 15th it celebrate it's 50th anniversary (half of a century history of animals' care).

And we, Torontonians, can proudly say that this is not just the largest zoo in the world, but also one of the most beautiful and diverse adventure park.

The Toronto Zoo received this recognition for the study and protection of animals, and breeding initiatives for critically endangered species, including the Amur tiger, Sumatran tiger, and western lowland gorilla. "The reproductive sciences department at the zoo has significantly aided international efforts to protect endangered animals,"- Best Diplomats, a New York-based organization, specializes in conducting Diplomatic Simulations of prestigious international bodies such as the United Nations, European Union, African Union, and more.

The Toronto Zoo has several diverse geographic regions: Africa Savanna, Africa Rainforest, the Americas, Australasia, Eurasia Wilds, Indo-Malaya, the Canadian Domain, Tundra Trek and Discovery Zone for the youngest visitors. Each zone is carefully designed to simulate the real natural conditions in which certain animal species live.
The Toronto Zoo was the first in the world to display animals by geographic regions.

Also the Toronto Zoo is the only zoo in Canada to employ a full-time nutritionist and a full-time reproductive physiologist. Nowdays, Zoo has it's own state-of-the-art Healthcare Centre, the hospital and rehabilitation centre for animals with highly skilled personnel and veterinarians. Zoo visitors can now catch a glimpse into the work they do behind-the-scenes having access to a viewing gallery featuring the following rooms: Diagnostic Imaging, Treatment, Surgery, Clinical Lab and Endocrinology Lab.

One of the latest major innovations at the Toronto Zoo, which has undergone many changes and improvements over its 50-year existence, is the opening of the Rainforest Orangutan Habitat. Its grand opening took place on June 30, 2023.

The Toronro Zoo has two the noteworthy displays: The Great Barrier Reef, a colorful exhibition of marine life from the Australian coast, and the Gorilla Rainforest, the biggest indoor gorilla exhibit in North America.

Visitors can easily spend an entire day in this wonderful park, filled with plants, flowers, boutiques, food trucks, cafes, and activities fun for people of all ages.

The park has wide accessibility to all pavilions and exhibits. In early May 2024, the first newly constructed accessible boardwalk was opened in the vast Rouge National Urban Park, connecting Americas and Africa Savanna picknik area. On May 24, the Zoo held a special event when the boardwalk was named the David K. Only Trail in honor of the incredible life and legacy of David K. Only, the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
David C. Onley was a champion of accessibility. As Ontario’s first Lt. Gov. with a physical disability, he adopted accessibility as the overarching theme of his mandate.

Just recently, in July, was unoficially opened the second new boardwalk from Indo-Malayan Pavillion to Africa Savanna, which also fully accessible for people with disabilities, seniors, parents with strollers, carriages and small kids.

The Toronto Zoo is not only a pioneer in the field of animal welfare, but there is no doubt that it can also be called a botanical garden.

Highly skilled hurticulturalists take care about zoo flora.
From their first steps at the zoo a lot of flowers, bushes, trees meet visitors from around the world. Interesting fact that flowers and some other plants changed not just seasonally, but annually zoo flora has it's own theme (Ρ‚Π΅ΠΌΡƒ).

Highly qualified horticulturalists and gardeners take care of the Zoo's flora. From the first steps in the Zoo, visitors from all over the world are greeted by a variety of flowers, bushes, and trees. An interesting fact is that flowers and some other plants change not just seasonally, but annually. The theme of the floristic displays and design of the zoo also changes periodically.

The Toronto Zoo celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. And the entire park blooms with this theme, which starts right from the parking lot outside. The long fence with large posters of different zoo animals surrounding the construction site of the new Nature Conservation Center building catches your eye as soon as you get out of the car.

This provides a unique opportunity for visitors to return to the zoo to see it in full bloom in the summer or snow-white in the winter, to welcome the awakening of nature in the spring or to see all the colors of the famous Canadian autumn.

On June 25, the Toronto Zoo proudly hosted an event to officially launch a major construction project, the Toronto Zoo Conservation Centre, as well as kicked-off a 50 days of celebrations teading up to the Zoo’s 50th anniversary on August 15th, 2024.
Over the past 50 years, the Toronto Zoo has been committed to animal welfare and has collaborated with the University of Toronto Scarborough on research and educational programs.

In June 2024, the Toronto Zoo welcomed visitors to the newly renovated GreenHouse, which is larger, better equipped to care for plants with a variety of needs, including very exotic ones, and has the potential to be used as a beautiful event space.
The renovation enhances the Toronto Zoo's ability to support diverse ecosystems and provides a healthy environment for both plants and animals. This state-of-the-art facility would not have been possible without the generous financial support for this project from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency.
