The Ontario government is celebrating the completion of Mount Sinai Hospital’s redevelopment project that will ensure people can access the care they need, when they need it, for years to come. The province invested $383 million to support the project, which is the largest redevelopment in Mount Sinai Hospital’s history.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is making record investments in hospital infrastructure to expand capacity across the province,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “We are excited to mark the completion of the largest redevelopment in Mount Sinai Hospital’s history, ensuring families across the Toronto region are provided with the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”
Over 323,000 square feet of hospital space was renovated to build a new and expanded emergency department, operating rooms and intensive care unit. The new, more modern space will improve care for patients undergoing life-saving surgery, requiring emergency care, and for those with cancer. Renovations include:
• An expanded and redesigned emergency department
• Redevelopment of 19 operating rooms, including two new operating rooms
• Redevelopment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) including 36 new beds
• Expanding the medical/surgical inpatient unit by 28 beds
• Renovating the hospital kitchen
• Renovating a new, modern space for the ambulatory oncology program
“Mount Sinai Hospital plays a vital role in our health-care system,” said Dr. Gary Newton, President and CEO of Sinai Health. “The expansion and modernization of Mount Sinai’s facilities was essential to provide new and expanded care for the people of Toronto, and specialized programs for all Ontarians. We thank the Ontario government for this investment in enabling Sinai Health to create state-of-the-art spaces and services that will serve our communities today and in the future.”
Through Your Health: A Plan For Connected and Convenient Care, the Ontario government is making it easier for people of all ages to connect to the care they need, when they need it. This includes building new hospitals to expand services available to people in their community while reducing wait lists and wait times.
